Flexible Work Options for Field-Based Sales Teams in Sri Lanka: Reducing Travel Stress by Offering Remote and Hybrid Solutions

 


Introduction

Sales jobs, particularly those that require extensive fieldwork, are very demanding in terms of travel; hence, highly stressful and can result in a high level of burnout among employees. Companies these days are embracing flexible work conditions by considering remote or hybrid work arrangements to help reduce the travel stress for their sales teams so they can be healthier and more productive. This can be revolutionary for aspects related to employee welfare and overall performance in Sri Lanka, where field-based sales personnel often have to travel through bustling urban areas and pluralistic rural settings.

 


Flexi-work arrangements, such as working from home and hybrid schedules, are more suitable for field sales jobs. Such facilities offer employees the choice to design workdays in ways that minimize stress levels without adversely affecting productivity. In various studies conducted under the burnout theory, Maslach and Leiter (2016) comment that a stressful environment along with inflexibility is detrimental to the physical and mental health of employees, decreasing engagement levels while increasing turnover ratio. In the context of Sri Lanka, where road congestion and a lack of convenient public transportation add to the daily struggles of field-based work, these flexible options could help alleviate a significant component of work-related stress.

 

By offering flexibility, one can also drive more engagement in and satisfaction with jobs. In this regard, JD-R theory stipulates that providing the employee with the opportunity to decide when and where to work develops motivation while reducing stress because the job demands are offset by resources like autonomy and support (E.Demerouti et al., 2001). It is possible to find practical evidence for the effectiveness of flexible work models with regard to improving morale among employees from multinational companies operating businesses in Sri Lanka, two examples being Nestlé and Unilever. Indeed, some companies that have been offering remote and hybrid work options report better productivity, with reduced turnover also recorded within their field sales teams-surely a sign that flexibility helps these sales pros keep their eyes on the prize and their motives high.

Conclusion

The flexible work option-notably, remote and hybrid solutions-has a very promising pathway to reduce travel-related stress among field sales forces. Thus, the adoption of flexible work arrangements through offering employees options for the mode or location of work, while ensuring the responsibilities are performed well, would be an effective strategy by Sri Lankan companies interested in fostering a healthy and productive workforce. The study also hopes that companies and employees would share their experiences on flexible work arrangements and also indicate the effect these changes have brought on productivity and morale.
